In 1979, President Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed on the roof of the White House’s West Wing as a symbol of the nation’s continuing focus on energy conservation and commitment to clean fuel sources, and to represent a first step toward escaping the United States’ crippling dependence on foreign oil. When Ronald Reagan was elected in 1981, one of his first moves was to order the solar panels removed.
